Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to join Heavy D at the studio as he started the recording process of his first rap album in over 11 years. Here are some candid images from the session.
As always, you capture the person's essence. I love the fact that you used black and white film. It adds a mystery to all subject matters and makes the observer stare at the photograph longer. Excellent work!!!!
Keep the photographs coming Derrick!!!
P.S. I love that Heavy D didn't look into the camera. The shots look more natural that way.
From photographer to photographer, man these are dope. Heavy D still has that great swag with him and you captured it well with the angles and all. Very impressed.
love these. curious if you ever shoot video with your 5D mark II? i'm a filmmaker, just started to embrace the DSLR thing.. would love to check out your work on that if you do. thx!
Great photos... he appears to be in deep thought in them. I saw him perform in Chi in Sept. and it was quite a treat! Looking forward to hearing his new music. Awesome!
Beautiful photographs...I love shooting with black & white, it captures different nuances & details. Great PENSIVE shots !!! I was sprung on "D" back in the day...guess I still am. THANKS.
Finally...HEAVY HEARD MY PRAYERS!!! D-nice I have been following your post for sometime...hoping you will do a entry on my personal favorite MC of ALL TIME! ( D-nice you were/are incredible....especially as a producer...but with Heavy its a little personal) See Heavy made you dance...which kids dont do anymore! I wrote VH1 about Heavy being honored and never heard back from them. Let me educate a few people. Before Biggie, Pun or any other big men ...there was HEV! And how many people have made three concept albums back to back ...all different with out changing his style. Peaceful Journey, Blue Funk and Nutitn But Love. CLASSICS ... WHO DOES THAT NOW? I always wanted to meet him and hopefully still will if he do a promo tour. Heavy D need to show still youngsters how to entertain and still come off as one of the deepest ...ok he is not Rakim but he had his on style. Who's the man " Yes, too many brothers be fakin' moves or frontin' grooves Peace to all the brothers on the block, drinkin' and passin' brew Money tried to flip but he got flopped Said, it was his corner, let him know his corner's on my block" Creative, innovative, Unique and did it with the big names as well....The HEAVSTER! and D-nice I would love to see you pick up the mic as well...They still just crumbs on the table!
I love your composition and the use of the B&W it gives more meaning the candids and the recording session. It makes one feel as if they were present. Grace and peace.

Lots of energy and the ladies loved the cat! Welcome back homie!
