The Legends of Hip-Hop

After spending the day at the Violator office, Chris Lighty and I decided to attend the KRS-ONE concert at SOB’s. Next year is the 20th anniversary of our first recording, “South Bronx”, and Lighty and I thought that it would be a great reminder of how far we’ve come to watch KRS-ONE perform it live. When we arrived at SOB’s we were greeted by KRS-ONE’s brother, DJ Kenny Parker, whom by the way is the Saturday night resident DJ at Club 2 I’s, located on 14th street in Manhattan. After speaking to Kenny for a few minutes, we heard the sound of a loud motorcycle engine. When the rider of the bright red cycle removed his helmet and revealed his identity, it was none other than hip-hop icon Freddy Foxx. From that point on I knew this was going to be a night of reminiscing and great storytelling.

Inside of SOB’s, we ran into other hip-hop pioneers like Masta Ace, Kool Herc, Coke La Rock, DJ Evil Dee, the notorious Just-Ice, DJ Grand Master Dee of Whodini, The Grand Wizard Theodore, DJ Cool V, Bizzy Bee and many others.

Yo, these pics are tight, but you forgot about Sean Price(aka Ruck from Heltah Skeltah) in the pic with Buckshot. Peace

Respect to D-nice,cool pictures men. I invite all of you hip hop fans to my site http://tupacworld.canalblog.com/ peace.

dj kev-ski...i am strictly old school because i was attending parties back in 1977 when the young dj flash was tearing up and introducing the turntables to audiences and doing things on them we had never seen before!!! i understand that you collect OLD SCHOOL tapes...get at me on my email...and barry b ...he is my little cousins father ...small world...later.

Hey! My name is Richard im a graphic / illustrator
and also a amateur photographer.
Im from Sweden and happened to come across your webb site. Kinda cool seeing all these old cats.
You see i may not be as enlightened as the rest of the peeps on your comment list, but my recelection of you (d-nice) isnt that you were a photographer but a rapper. So its cool to see that rappers are photographers. The pictures bring a hole other perspective since you live in that envoirement.
It wouldnt be the same if Any Libowitz wouldve taking those pictures. Even though shes a great photographer! But I must say I miss the more personal pictures. Most pictures youve taken are group photos.
If you look at that photographer called Zaphyr or something. Im talking bout the dude who took pictures in the mid 80s of young graff artist suchs "seen" and breakers (rocksteday crew) and so forth. Now theres a
more personal touch to it. If you now what I mean.
So what im tryin to say is that all these Mcs such as Krs One, Buckshot ( Buy the way, that new album with buck
and ninth wonder is slamin) just Ice, etc are all posing in cool positions and not always showing there true sides. Sure! In a way they are but you cant be cool 24/7 if ou get what i mean. Man..... maybe im bullshitin
But i miss these more personal photos of rappers and their everyday living. I grew up with listening to De la, pharcyde, gangstarr and so on. In way they ve been role models for me . And now a days when you see all these boring commercial mcs you get a hole other picture of how they live. Its all glamour, diamond rings and chains( hell its not even gold chains anymore) and gives a very negative side towards woman. I mean all these woman in rap videos are all wieved as prostitudes. So I wish that I somebody such as your self would show the true side of these rappers. And not this bling bling junk you get stuffed with every fuckin day. Hey buy all means, nothing bad in making money but dont get obsessed buy it! These videos are fuckin propaganda for the filthy rich who runs this industry. And those rappers who participate are just puppets!
I dont no, but it just doesn't feel right!
Guess this isnt the right webb page to discuss these things so im gonna end this by saying. Keep up the good work!

Ps. More polaroids! There expensive I know! But yet so nice!

Your pictures are amazing. Is doing a wedding beneath you? I mean no disrepect.

yo, dis is deshawn represent the 2114 from Sydney Australia. jst wanna say u gotta tight site, nice 2 c some brothers representing tru hip hop. im out here watchin the aussie hip hop scene come up so look out for some of us aussie niggas comin up in da hip hop game fo sho.

I'm so happy I decided to pay MSN a visit this morning. It's good to see one of the pioneers of the game still doing his thing. My the Creature bless you always D! One!

What was I thinking when I missed this ? Alright Dee, I can't say you did not warn me ! History is in the making again . What is next Aries birthday parties ? Peace !

The pics are tight.

Great job! Good stuff..I'm glad to see stuff like this out there. This is the real deal. Appreciate you sharing it.

I hope that D Nice reads this. I am so not into the posting thing but I had to this time. I am a 29 year old black female. Over the years I have lost the feel for music that I had back in the good ole days. I mean just to see ya'll brings back so many memories for me. Man I wish that I could just go back even for 10mins to be exactly where I were when you guys where rockin hard. I have gotten to the point where I am falling out of love with music. And that's bad because I can sing and that's my first breath. Anyway. I miss all of ya'll and am glad to see and hear that you all are still around. Oh and D Nice is still cute. Ha Ha! LOVE!

Peace to all,
Just wanted to say I was just recently thinking of that slammin' base line from "Call Me D-Nice" (I was 19 years old at the time in college) and decided to do a search and what did I see???? This dope site. Good to see you're still around D-Nice and I hope the best for you and all the old school crew from BDP. I've long since lost track of all my most of my old school tapes and albums (BDP, Just Ice, Biz Markie, Eric B and Rakim, EPMD, even stuff people probably don't remember at all like T-La Rock, and Steady B's old stuff) - Big mistake on my part. But i'm finding that stuff (all of it) and rebuilding my collection. Thanks D-Nice and stay up man.

As Salaamu-Alaikum Bro.D-Nice,

Good to know that ALLAH has preserved you, and still allows you to represent! I'm from the era
when hip hop was called b-rock!(remember) My cuz
used to roll with tuffy & hakim(channel live), so
i used to see KRS all the time. As a matter of fact, some of my bros. in the Nation of Islam and
myself did security for him free of charge when he visited Central Connecticut State Univ. some
years ago to do a lecture.
May ALLAH continue to Bless,Protect,&Guide you &
your family.

What's up! It's your gurl Wizdom representing the culture since way back in the day and I am in Mississippi where we are last but never least! D-Nice you are one of D nicest emcees to grip the mic! You need to come to Mississippi and visit the Gulf coast, Biloxi is where we at! So good to see you on the MSN home page today! Rock on and Keep Christ first!

"Criminal Minded" was the first hip hop album that I ever bought in CD format. Prior to that it was some vinyl and tons of mixtapes. I can't believe it still plays. The funny thing is that there is a typo on the sleeve that says "the bride is over" instead of "bridge". Is that a well known typo?
In any case, I just wanted to say thanks for your work with BDP. You guys pretty much defined hip hop for a lot us us. I am also glad to see that you are still creating. Thanks for sharing your photos.
Scott La Rock R.I.P. God Bless.

Hi Derick
Glad to know your web site. weve been trying to track you down .my daughter ledia .this is your aunt your father ssister.

"What's up D?" I'm an old fan of yours. The Knowledge that you and the BDP crew dropped back then is irreplaceable. It taught us to have respect for each other and that we could have fun doing that. I remember all of you. I still have cassette tapes with you, BDP, Just-Ice, DJ Red Alert, Ms. Melody, etc. I sometimes wonder how everyone is doing and hope that things are o.k. Life is something isn't it? Stay up. Peace and Happiness to all of you and your families. Later.

"Call me D-Nice"...PROUDLY one of several tracks that will always be known as the SOUNDTRACK OF THE 86' HONDA CIVIC! Speakers filled the hatchback of course....

Fresh for 1991!!!

NOT SURE IF D-NICE READS THIS BUT YO D.....THIS IS D.J. KEV-SKI. THE CAT WITH ALL THE OLD SCHOOL TAPES THAT RUNS WITH CHILL-WILL & DOUG FRESH AND THEM. YOU, ME, M.C. DOC-LUV AND KENNY B (THE MAGICIAN) USED TO KICK IT BACK IN THE DAY IN HARLEM/BRONX. GOOD TO SEE YOU'RE DOIN' YOUR THING. CATCH YOU LATER...

Once again, you cover the gambit of the human personality. Your talents seem boundless. How great it would be to sit and reason with you on the finer points of Photography, Music and life. Again I am amazed with your attention to detail. Simply put, these photos are HOT. No debate. Your decision to make them black and white brings the minds eyes to the details of the photos. The eyes are not washed away by seductive colors, one is forced to focus on the picture. Thank you for the inspiration.

Damn! I found your site on MSN! That's real hot D!
I was thinking about your joint " Call me D-Nice" the other day and here it is today I'm posting something on your site. That's crazy! D-Nice you're still dope and I wish you the very best!

Thank you, for taking the time to post this, and send out your emails. Peace!

Yo, duke, BDP edcuated and entertained me as a teenager in the late 1980s. The South Bronx versus the Queensbridge represents one of the 'illest' battle records of all times. You may have 'whacked' DJ Scott La Rock's hair, but your "Call Me D-Nice" album cover demonsrated that it was not done in vain because I tried my best to grow a high-top fade like yours. It was smooth. Peace and love to BDP.

MAN I GOT LOVE FOR YOU KEEP DOING YOUR THING YO YO IT'S TIME TO FLOW

Classic for sure...dope seeing all those heads come out....yo, I'm about to get on the tables and bust doubles of "yo nice, let me know!!!"

I had such a crush on you back in the days...nice to see you looking as handsome now.

Yo, just want to say that I grew up on yall, big ups to yall. The music is a real inspiration to a lot of us....

Gotta ask though....where is the music!?

Great pics! I am impressed...do you do your own printing? I'm a DJ and I drop a couple of your tracks on a regular basis in the club for some old school flava. Keep up the strong work!

Hello! I'm not sure if this is getting to the correct person or not, but i've alway's been a fan of D-nice ever since i was a young girl. Now i myself have made a little way into the world of hip-hop and rock. The reason i'm trying to reach you is because i have something new that will be on the rise in the next few years, regarding changing the face of music for the future. I would love to speak with some of the original hip-hop founders in hopes that maybe you can help me become one of the pioneers of music. This comes from no other place, except for a true desire and love of music and people.
You won't be disappointed. Please respond.
Thanks so much, Kisa :)

Great pictures, BDP and some other old school acts should do some type of reunion tour....By the way, what happened to the Scott La Rock story?

Great pictures. Looks like Sean Price next to Buckshot. But is that really Just-Ice???
