D-Nice The Barber
I woke up this morning and realized that I’m about to reach a personal milestone this June. On June 19th, I will be 35 years old. It’s amazing how time flies. What I didn’t realize is that June 12th is the 15 anniversary of my first solo recording, “Call Me D-Nice”. Well my friends, it’s official, I am now that rapper your parents used to listen to!
It has truly been an amazing 35 years and I’ve been blessed with memories, both good and bad, that people twice my age have yet to experience. One of my fondest memories was the time when DJ Scott La Rock & KRS-ONE came over to my apartment for a haircut. I was 16 years old at the time and I had just purchased my first Oster haircutting kit. When Scott and Kris arrived at my place for what was supposed to be a rehearsal for a performance scheduled for that night, I somehow convinced them that in less than 24 hours, I had become a master barber. Now, what I still find funny after all of these years is how could two adults trust a 16 year old, with no prior barbering experience, with a set of clippers?
What should have been Scott receiving a simple Caesar cut, turned into a butchering. I left Scott with patches of hair all over his head. Scott, being the kind man that he was, never got upset. He laughed about it and headed to a hat boutique and purchased the very cap that was used on the "Criminal Minded” album cover. I guess I carved a place in hip-hop history.

Incredible. I won the NewMusicSeminar Dj Battle in 94` and i used your record "My name is D-Nice" together with LL Cool J`s "I`m Bad". I made it go : "I`m the baddest - though i hate to admit it - taking out all you - suckas and you don`t know how i did it...."
That was one of the greatest moments of my life - thankyou for an incredible song. You get much love here in Denmark where i`m from. DjNoize.

D-Nice. I'm glad I just found you. I just recently purchased "Call Me D-Nice" for the 2nd time. The lyrics had been running through my head and I couldn't find my old copy so I had to search and find another.
I remember the first time I saw you on Yo!MTV Raps.
I'm a performer (spoken word & hip hop) and every now and then I throw in a D-Nice verse in my set. These young kids don't know anything but the new ish...so I feel like I gotta go back and let them in on some things.
Glad to see you are still around.
much peace to you.

I like your website! It is original and refreshing. I particularly like the way you share yourself through visual art and stories from your past. Actually, I thought you were younger; I guess hip-hop has really been around for a while now. This is crazy, from the block parties in the Bronx-to-Worldwide; and you can honestly say that you were a part of it. Well, Happy Birthday on 35 years young. Please post whether or not you will have a birthday bash, and the location. -Bx Love

YO what up D-Nice..You probably don't remember me but i was the mailroom clerk at Jive records for about a year.I remember when you and MS Melody and KRS! would come by the office and talk to Barry Weiss. You were always a real down to earth brother who kept it real despite being a celebrity and i always respected that. Will Smith aka the fresh prince was a snob but you and kool moe dee and samantha fox and the tribe called qwest were all real koo.I still can't believe jive never signed Kid Rock.I remember when he came in when he was trying to rap.I remember his birthday party when they gave him the cake in the form of a womans breast that was a classic.I had a great time working there.Ann Carli,Barry Weiss,JC,Kimmi,The other Melvin, were all cool and the guys downstairs in the studio also.I always wished i could have stayed in the music business somehow.I still support all the Jive artist especially THE BDP.I wore out my criminal minded cd and just bought another one.Much Love my brother.Melvin

I'm sitting here reading all these posts and it just brings back memories. It's funny my husband and I were just talking about D-nice like man, What ever happened to him? It's good to see that you're still doing good and make no mistake about it you did carve your name in hip hop history. It's like KRS said way back "hip-hop rules", and indeed it does, but it would have never been that way without people like you. Much love

Congrats on seeing 35 years on this planet and a lifetime of Hip Hop. I was first introduced to BDP in 1988 when i arrived at Howard University as a freshman. The music, the message, and the delivery blew my mind and I have been a dedicated fan for over 15 years. Thanks for all the great music and memories. Looking forward to hearing what you have coming next. Stop by my online household and check us out at hoodtech.

31 years old - I have a video of myself on a swing rapping each and every lyric to "My name is D-nice" - bopping to school listening to the lyrics in my head. My highschool sweetheart's name was Damien, we called him D-nice - then called him 808. We lost touch, then I met up with him and married him 15 years later - he has 808 tattooed on his arm. I like to think of it as synchronicity - music brings people together - music like yours is etched in our brains forever.

Oh My GODness! Such a blessing to see your face this morning when I get to work. I am from Mississippi and I am an artist(singer) been representing the culture since the mid 80's and KRS has taught me things about being black that I was not taught in Mississippi school systems. I am almost 31 now and like most heads.. I loved you and everything you brought to the vibe as such a young man in the game. It is a blessing to see your face again. Are you married? Tell us about your family....I want to know! Christ first all day. Wizdom

Hi D it's been a long time since I've heard anything about you. It's real good to see some of the ole skool rappers doing really well. But your experience reminds me of me, coloring my best friend's hair it was real short at the time. And she wanted it reddish-orange. It was bright orange-reddish we still laugh about that one. the funny thing about it is she is the one that usually does hair.
Posted by: Redd | April 14, 2005 08:19 AM
It is good to see you are still doing well. I asked my husband if he could find out some information about you(since I was a big fan and claimed by brothers album of yours as my own)since he is from the Bronx, but I guess he thought I was joking. May God continue to bless you D-Nice and I will always remember how the 808 made me want to be a DJ

Bdp was so far ahead of there times theses cat's today still have'nt caught up yet. It's good to see you're still doing your thing .I still got your album too. on another note hey D, every chick in my school wanted you. Thanks for help making the foudation of hip hop solid, it still stands strong despite all these fake wack dudes these day's.
It's time to stand together in a unity
Cause if not then we're soon to be
Self-destroyed, unemployed
The rap race will be lost without a trace
Or a clue but what to do
Is stop the violence and kick the science
Down the road that we call eternity
Where knowledge is formed and you'll learn to be
Self-sufficient, independent
To teach to each is what rap intended
But society wants to invade
So do not walk this path they laid.
It's....u da man D-Nice

Yo..........I remember purcahsing the single 'Call Me D-Nice' on cassette in '91! Man, I'm 31 years old & still listening to the thousands of old school tracks I have since transfered to my PC & laptop.
I supervise 12-15 employees for a lrge corporation & teach my young staff (23-28 years old), all about how hip-hop used to be hip-hop!

I don't slur my words when I rap 'cause that's wack, huh
But in fact, I do not slack
When I drop the funky, funky lyric on a track
Man I wish Hip-Hop was the same as it was - but it's a business now and you know the deal. I remember stayin' up late just to tape some song on a radio show using my box, and then flauntin' that s**t the next day at school. Wow things are different, huh? Fab 5 Freddy used to have the latest on Yo MTV Raps, and we would call each other and stay on the phone thru the whole show. Your place is etched in stone, D-nice - if it wasn't then why do I still have 'They call me D-nice' on my Ipod?? Remember what it meant to D.J. Scott La Rock....P.E.A.C.E.

This story reminds me of when my best friend who is 2 years my senior tried to press my curly locks, claiming that she had been doing it for years. We were barely in our double digits so there wasn't much that we had been "doing for years". Well, she got as far as my widow's peak and then her mom came in and saved me and told her to quit lyin' about being an experienced beautician. LOL.
Glad she didn't get far enough to burn my ear...
