Go Kwame, It's Your Birfday!
Ok, let's take it back to 1989. No rapper at the time had a lock on fashion like Kwame. He single-handedly created the polka dot craze. It's a good thing that hip-hop clothing companies weren't the norm back then because I would have hated to see polka dot jeans mass-produced! I remember the Christmas gift I received from my mother that year. It was a black button-up shirt with white polka dots all over it. The worst part of the shirt was that it had one large polka dot on the back. Now, where the hell was I wearing that? But, no matter what polka dot get-up Kwame wore, it was 100 times better than the black & white polka dot, stars and clovers leather suit KRS had on in the Self Destruction video!
Last night we celebrated Kwame's birthday at the Canal Room. Quite a few old-school heads including Dougie Fresh, Prince Po from Organized Konfusion, O.C., DJ Tat Money from Steady B. and many others attended the event. Amanda Diva & La La hosted the party while DJ Wiz and I provided the sounds.

At 38 years old, it does my heart glad to see all the golden age Hip Hop stars still doing big things and looking good. I just want to give props to ALL the kats at Kwame' party...I still have all their tapes.....yes, I said tapes....I opened up a show for Run-DMC in Baltimore Maryland circa 1985 as a breakdancer and remember them all well. D-Nice, I would love to see a concert of all the golden age rappers on tour. I'd make sure that you were well represented.
Thanks for keeping us posted and we all still got mad love for you...

I was a BIG fan back in the day's (yes, I used to wear the polkadots)
I got his first and second album, but than lost him.
I live in europe, maybe that had something to do with it.
He is still one of my influences in my own music.

Yooooooooo! This shiznit is bananas! It's a treat to see that ya'll are still around, throwing parties and doing your thing. I have to ditto what I have read in a several of these postings. I am 34 and I literally watched hip hop grow and morph into all sorts of shyt (some good and some bad, and some just plain whack!). I am from Atl and had the privelege to travel up and down the east coast all the way down past Ga to demographics like Fla and La. My neighbor across the street from me was a DJ from South Bronx and I heard everything that ever came out from 82 on (believe it!). I am truly a student of the game and everything I am today, I owe to hip-hop. I would like to see more of yall bringing that good shyt back. Todays rendition of what we had is sooooooooo so plastic. I have started listening to all kinds of other music, just to have some variety from the mess thats out today!

I got your website from an email that my uncle sent me. Its nice to see that your still doing your thing and doing even better with all you have going on for you. I was a big BDP fan and I still have the majority of albums you all had put out. I know you said you sounded crazy back in the days listening to yourself, but those same words that sounded crazy, I would rap and act like I was spittn' them lyrics back then. I even tried to get me that short fit you rocked on Im gonna git you sucka, but I didnt have enough ends. Anyway, I wish continued success for you and I hope to work with you someday in this life time. Check me out at my website, and if you have time let me know what you think. D.Hills is my uncle who is still building the site for me. Stay Up, Stay Strong
PEACE

Looking at those pictures took me back to high school. Seeing everybody that had such a positive outlook on hip-hop music and culture, still holding it down. What I wouldn't give to bring that back! Keep it Real D!

Hey what's up everyone, i bumped into this site on msn's homepage..I gotta thank D-nice and Kwame the Boy Genius along with the old skool heads for making my jr.high and high school years some of the best times of my life. The Rythm is still my all time favorite, mellow laid back track, lyrics, vibe, all groundwork for todays acts. I'm from Winnipeg,Manitoba in Canada and i'm sure hardly anyone knows where it is,but hip-hop was deep and in those days it was misunderstood..baggy colored jeans, crazy haircuts, dye jobs and dance moves. I had about 5 other black kids in my jr. high school. '88 and onwards hip-hop defined my life who i am and in a land of mostly white people all we had was our music...now 15-16 years later every kid, white black, asian all identify with hip-hop. It's crazy because today peeps call me OLD SCHOOL cuzz most every cd has some golden age hip-hop on it.I'm 28 and lucky to have come through such a beautifull time, i feel like i've watched hip-hop grow up literaly....not all good but at least I have the memories when brothers and sisters showed love and he music brought us closer......From the top to the bottom of my heart THANK YOU and please know that your music touched a city and the lives of 5 black kids in cold cold PEG-CITY, Canada. Oh...one more thing D-nice.."it's over now" was some ish i used to play to break up with girls in those crazee teeenage summers.....LOVE,PEACE AND HAIR GREASE.

Ok, so I lied. I said I probably wouldn't come back and here I am again. Your pics are GREAT. I'm impressed. No worries about the polka dot shirt...remember the harem pants that Hammer used to wear? Heaven forbid if any man wore boxers with those....HAHAHAHA...I'm tickled just imagining that! Anhyoo, my college sweetheart had a Kwame-inspired haircut (which my parents thought was horrific), and I remember I took the little bit of money I had and got him a suit (to wear to my 18th birthday bash) - yep, you guessed it...HAREM PANTS INCLUDED - and the jacket had POLKA DOTS ON IT! Maaaaaaaaaaan...I'm soooooooo glad that look isn't still in. Has The Oaktree gone out of business? If not, they should have for selling those suits!! HAHAHAHA!
Have a great weekend. Oh...and thanks for responding to my last post...very cool of u.

D,
I thank you and Wiz SO much for making the party last night so successful. I know that parties are only as good as the DJs and you made the hard work my company did last night pay off!!! D-like I said, you are my DJ of choice ALWAYS-where else can I hear "Candy Girl."
We have gotten so many excellent comments about last night and Kwame had a wonderful time. I truly thank you both. Shout out to Amanda Diva and La La for doing ya thing last night also! Peace...

It is always good to get back with my bruthas that helped make this music so it could get to where it is at today. It was soooo much fun seeing all of them again, and this won't be the last time. The hip hop true school lives forever! Our era created fun times and fun music that still lives on today. It was shown at Kwame's party and will show again at the next party, at least as long as Derrick and I are deejaying! lol...

whats up,is there any way I could get a burn of any hilltop hustlers or kwame first two albums?anyone?
Posted by: j.jordan | April 19, 2005 07:06 PM
Just to clarify, DJ Tat Money was originally Steady B's DJ, but became Kwame's DJ. This happened when Three Times Dope broke away from The Hilltop Hustlers. EST and Kwame was running together for a minute. They did a song together on 3xDope's 2nd album. I think it was 10 Little Indians.
Overall, Kwame has ALWAYS been a good producer. In my opinion, his song Ownlee Eue which combined Mardi Gras w/ plush R&B production is the blueprint for a lot of the R&B/Rap fusion of it's time.
Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud, Redhead Kingpin and Kwame would have to be in my top 5 slept on producers of their time. Funny how they all ran in the same circles.

OK, I just have to say this: Doug E. Fresh was my first concert experience ever!! He and Slick Rick were the headliners ~La Di Dodi~ (however you spell it)...and none other than Klymaxx opened for them. I loved ol' Bernadette or whateva her name was...the drummer, she was cold. It cost me 12 big ones and it was December of 1985, I was 11 years old, and I went ALONE (cuz my friend's parent's were too cheap and mean to let them go)! My mom dropped me off and picked me up from the Civic Auditorium in Portland, OR. Wow! Those were the days. I wouldn't have missed that for the world.
