My Run-In With The Infamous Larry Davis

I grew up in a tenement apartment building in the Bronx, on the corner of 163rd Street and Woodycrest Avenue. Exactly four streets away from me lived the infamous Larry Davis. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Larry, he was a suspected killer who was wanted for the robbery and murder of six drug dealers in the late 1980's. Larry became a ghetto folk hero after wounding multiple police officers in a gun battle and leading the NYPD on a 17-day manhunt. He was eventually convicted in 1991 for the murder of a drug dealer.

On the streets, Larry was known as someone with a nasty temper that you never wanted to cross. I always felt that Larry was cool and that the rumors of his ferocious ways were untrue. At least, that was until I got on his bad side. Some of the kids in the neighborhood had odd ways of making money. One of the things they would do was to crawl down into the street drains and sort through the sewage in hopes of finding anything of value. Some days they would return with lost jewelry or a bag of dirty coins retrieved from the sewers of New York City.

One day I ran into Larry's younger cousin while hanging out in the neighborhood park. He approached me and asked if I would be interested in purchasing a gold rope chain and an anchor pendant from him that he found while sorting through the sewage. Now back in the 80's, everyone who had a little bit of flavor wore the rope chain and anchor combination so of course I was interested in purchasing the items. I gave him his asking price in exchange for the jewelry.

A few days later, I heard a loud knock at my door. A knock like that could only have been one of two things, either the cops or someone planned on robbing us. I slowly walked over to the door and looked through the peephole and was shocked to see that it was Larry. I immediately thought to myself, "Why the hell is he knocking at my door?" So, with the door still closed, I said, "What's up Larry?" and he replied, "Open this fucking door and give me my motherfucking chain." "What chain?" I asked, and he said, "The fucking chain my cousin stole from me and sold to you!"

Now, I am no fool. Although I was only 16 years old at the time, I clearly understood the rules of the streets. Had I opened the door, there's a possibility that Larry would have pulled out his gun and put a couple of slugs in me and I was not about to take that chance. So I said to him that I didn't have it. This only infuriated him even more. He said, "I'm going to walk to my house and return in 15 minutes. You better have my fucking chain."

The only thing that saved me was when my cousin Vanessa, whom I lived with, ran into Larry while he was walking back to his house. He informed her that if I didn't return his jewelry, he was going to kill me. She rushed home crying and got the jewelry from me and returned it to him. A few weeks later, the NYPD hunt for Larry Davis began.

Yo, Larry Davis Is My GodFather....literally. The guy Shams is my dad. The bald light skin guy. I just want to clarify two things...
1) Larry was no sucker, or any thing of that nature.
2) Larry wasn't just a dealer. Larry was heavily into music. Now I and My Dad are continuing that legacy.

If you don't belive me.. check www.myspace.com/shamsdabaron or www.myspace.com/lilshamsdabaron or www.strictlybeats.net

Ya'll know me soon

ohh and that doc. was stolen...he nver gave the rights to Troy Reed, just like all of his other docs and Dame Dash don't know movie matierial when he sees is

I want to clarify two things I said about Larry Davis in my last comment.
1) While he did maintain a bogus hunger strike, Davis did come out the next morning. Neither one of us was afraid of the other; and, frankly, what he said made sense,
2) I'm too old to grandstand anymore. No, I'd not happily shoot Davis between the eyes. We're both children of the City: reading that article just 'flashed' me back to that time, and I could feel the pressure of the trigger on my finger, hear the shots like if it was yesterday.
One side of the law or the other, thinking you're right will lead to ruin.
Guns, violence, and the drama of the street destroyed both of us.

I went to prison for shooting a scumbag like Larry Davis. Frankly, this being my fourth shooting, I lost my temper when the scumbag smirked at me: I punched and knocked him about ten feet; then chased and shot him.
In Fishkill prison, they locked Davis directly on my left. I don't think it was accidental. I spoke through my cell door, "Davis, when we unlock I'm coming for you."
He didn't reply; about five minutes later he asked who I was. I said "Heron, a New York cop."
An hour later Davis gave me the wisest advice I'd receive in prison. He said, "Heron, they want you to hurt me. I get hurt and you get more time. They want me to hurt you. I get more time."
He never came out of his cell, maintaining a bogus hunger strike while being sneaked food from another inmate.
Yet he was right. I met plenty of cop-killers, serial rapists, and pedophiles in prison during my 1 1/2 years. If I hadn't taken Davis' advice, I'd still be in prison
I'd happily shoot Davis between the eyes though.

This documentary is a very important tool. There is only one down fall; people receive the wrong message. The message that should have went across is that we can't trust the police, media, and government officals. It doesn't mean that we can do as we please and not suffer any reprecussions to our actions. Yes, it was wrong for the police to be involved in bringing the black community down, by involving themselves in the bringing of crack cocain into our community, but it is moreso wrong for us as black people to make ourselves available for this type of handling. I think that is why his story is so complelling. His way of life has changed, but all we remember is him being this ganster that was the "realist". The "real" Larry Daivd lives today to tell people not to follow his path.

yo.....i just saw the larry davis doc. too....this nigga was thorough man i wish i was a lil older then 5 in '86 but anywayz...im from d.c and we got a home town legend too....watch the documentary on RAYFUL EDMONDS "the biggest drug kingpin in washington d.c HISTORY" you can watch it on youtube.com

my comment is for the last person that made a comment i believe that they are anonymous. people are not glorifiying him for his behavior as an adolesent we glorify him because he was a brave man, he exposed the truth and the truth is white people put those drugs in are neihborhood to wipe us out, another form of slavery, the goverment is corrupt and so is the dirty ass blue uniform wearing pigs. all he did was expose the truth and the average person that does not like him is just mad that they were exposed and there plan to wipe us out did not work because drugs effects all types of cultures not just black. he was forced to put those drugs in the street the only thing he did wrong was get greedy and i would not even say that was wrong he just got smart and made money off the shit, either way it goes that shit was going to hit our streets anyway it was intended for it to be that way.

i watched the larry davis story for the first time last night and out of all the american gangsters he inspired me the most, his life was a big adventure and his life plays a big part on todays society, someone asked how that bullet did not penitrate his head my comment would because god was watching him. everything happends for a reason and this reason would be for those dirty ass corrupt police and goverment to be exposed thats why his life has been spared. god dont life ugly and he aint fond of pretty. those bastards brought those drugs in are areas to wipe off what was left of our black culture and dont get me wrong the did succeed but they payed a price too. I dont feel sorry for none of the officers that were wounded in the gun battle thats what the fuck they get. not to mention they was beating the shit out of the nigga when he was in jail, they did him wrong and no body desearves that. he seen a oppurtunity to make money and he did but like they say all money aint good money.

I'm just reading the comments posted on your site and I'm in shock of the way people are glorifiying this man. Before he was "set up" by the police this man was nothing but a bully in his neighborhood. This is who we are glorifying? Those of you who really didn't know him and are just watching the DVD have no idea. Being a menace in your community and hurting people for no logical reason is nothing to glorify. Someone left a comment saying he would pay to meet Larry Davis and he's really selling drugs. It's 2006 and our brothers are still trying to sell drugs and make it in this world that way. That is ignorant. What happened to getting an education? GLORIFY THAT. How about glorifying the brothers who are really on their grind in a legal way trying to make it in this crazy world. It's amazing to me how our people complain about the "man" yet some of our brothers put themselves in these negative situations like: selling drugs and hanging out on the corners doing nothing productive and using the excuse "school or working a 9-5 job just isn't for them". WAKE UP PEOPLE, WAKE UP

Hi my name is Elias also known as E-banga and I'm from 183'rd street in the bronx. See I'm a hood nigga living in the hood, matter of fact in the same hood where larry davis turned him self in. I am amazed by the larry davis story. it has taught me a lot. Not to be scare of no one specially cops. them faggots I don't even look at.
I'm in the streets all day so is hard to avoid police contact. Not looking at them keep me away from them searching me. If i can meet larry davis I will pay up to 5000$ just to have a 1 hour interview with him.
Don't think that I'm some soft nigga i'm not.
I am a young crazy hustler and I really sell drugs I dont just say It like these fake ass rappers do.
Larry davis you are my hero dogg.
I'm 20 years old and this is not a mothafucking school project. this is my life.
Larry Davis i love you and if you give me a chance to meet you, you will gain so much knowledge that to survive out here I know I need.
God bless.

Hi,
I'm a Columbia Journalism student and I'm doing a school project on the Larry Davis manhunt. I'm looking for people with a firsthand account of what the neighborhood was like during those 17 days. I would really appreciate it if you would let me interview you, because it sounds like you do have an eyewitness account.
If you are available for a quick interview, please email me back.

Thank You.

I never had heard of that man they call Larry Davis...until I came across the dvd last night. At first I'm looking at it like, "Oh Okay...this is just another hood dvd". Boy oh boy was I amazed. I watched it in amazement, mouth wide open. I'm a young female (80's baby) so I really can't relate first hand with the corruption the cops put young black America through at that time. I can only look up to people such as Larry to tell the story. I'm so happy they got everything straightened out as far as the self defense claim. Growing up amongst killers, dealers, drug attics...with no real role models...you are bound to get in some sort of trouble. However I think it was courageous of Larry to say look enough is enough. The police knew that it would be their ass if Larry got the info out. I honestly think that those cops got what they deserved...you do dirt you derserve what comes along with it. While Larry Davis clearly is no angel...I applaud him on trying to make a bad situation right! You are a bad dude Larry Davis...witty yet sneaky! Loved it...played they asses lovely!

I remember Larry Davis back in 1984 or 85. I met him through some friends that I knew who lived on Woodycrest. We were all hanging out at this local little hole in the wall club in the basement of a building that we used to go to every week called the La Bonga on Sheridian. That was where I wittenessed him beat the shit out of some kid on his motorcycle. I mean he beat dude bad and then picked him up and slammed dude on the hard concrete. It was winter too, so you know everything hurts a little more when your cold.(lol)But I have much respect for Larry Davis. He was never a joke to be played with. He went for his and obviously was willing to die for what he belived in. He's a fearless Black Man and that's something we need more of. Why should he have to take shit from any other one regardless of a fucking blue uniform or a title? They learned the hard way when they fucked with him, y'all motherfuckas can bleed too. Larry keep your head up. No matter where you are at just remember that they can't keep a good man down and you will always be living proof of that. Peace.

IM FROM PA. I LIVE AN HOUR FROM NYC AND IN 1986 I REMEMBER SEEING THE STORY ON CHANNEL 11 NEWS BACK IN THE DAY. I WAS ONLY 8Y/O SO I DIDNT UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON, BUT NOW THAT IM IN MY 20'S AND BBEN THROUGH NEGATIVE ORDEALS WITH THE POLICE IN MY CITY (ALLENTOWN) I SEE HOW CROOKED THOSE MUTHERFUCKERS ARE!I DONT FEEL SORRY FOR ANY OF THOSE COPS. I WOULD LOVE TO MEET OR SPEAK TO LARRY SO I CAN PRAISE HIM FOR NOT TAKING THEIR BULLSHIT THAT NIGHT. FREE LARRY!!!

yeah that's crazy i remember it like yesterday the whole larry davis saga im very glad to see that these young brothers out here keeps what he did in the know because he did alot of it for our young brothers coming up now to set an example it's not the point of him being wild in the streets in those days you had to be hard or at least potrait to be you could'nt be soft living in that area or the bronx period point blank and anyone that's reading this can definetly agree with that and it still goes on today that man can't help where he grew up at really he was still a kid himself he really never had a chance these white police were older had families and lives what right did they have doing this they needed to be exposed im just glad these cats are out here have'nt forgotten about that man and d-nice you know how the game goes you could have gotten the same beef from jay-z does that make him the most ruthless man in the word no you were kids back then why try to assasinate that man's character by saying that what he went through might save one of your children one day it was real it really happend and you would'nt have heard any of this if they did what they came to do and that was kill him now whether he was a stick up kid on the streets is not the case what is the case is that they the nypd feel like they can do what ever they want to do to you when ever they want can you imagine how many larry d's there are out there? And till this day he's still incarcerated for defending himself what i do agree with is if you are put in a situation that you must survive by any means neccessary and i'm from the streets of brooklyn born and raised in bedstuy and i was'nt the best kid either because of my surroundings you can say whatever but until you have actually lived it yoy really don't understand that life you can be the softest person @ home behind closed doors but try that on the streets or even at school i know people that did'nt make it out of school and the 80's were'nt no joke they were killing over coats and sneakers not that it's no better now but if you made it out and you thought that you wouldn't because none of your family ever did congratulations and i still face drama with the police now and i'm a successful business owner i just had the police pull my husband over in our mercedes and ask him how he affords a vehicle like that now tell me it still does'nt go on. peace be to larry davis

This dude was the real deal and an urban cowboy for the cowards who are scared to speak for themselves. All of you are screaming free this man, but listen to the people from his neighborhood. This dude was a menace to his environment. People were scared of him. Not scared because of his shootout with police, but scared from the shit he did in the streets. I have had run ins with bitch as cops and with some good ones. Really think about the whole package before you scream release something.

yo i went up north yesterday to shawangunk correctional facility to visit my uncle and it just so happens larry davis walks in on a visit tha same day and sits right behind us my uncle introduced me to him he seemed like a cool dude but when he walked away my uncle said "nobody in here fucks wit that dude not tha niggaz locked in here or tha c.o's" now that what u call a real G

whats good fam? i used to live in his hood on 165th and summit ave. then i moved to 183rd and creston.

i remember larry davis had the city shook because they didnt know where he would pop up next.

i remember taking the 4 train back up town and there were 3 cops in every car on every train
every day and night for a while. and what people dont know was that dude shot through the wall at the cops with an ak47 and thats why a lot of people started buying those types of gats thats why i bought mine because its a baaaad!! tool to have.larry davis was narrowly escaping the cops grasp.

now he was a real hard dude but a little unintelligent for getting a cops. he was in a fight he couldnt win.

Larry Davis held me and my office manager up at gunpoint. It was a bogus assed realty company. I was the secretary. My job was to give the prospective clients an application and collect the finders fee which back in '86 was $90 bucks.

That fucker came in with his sister and paid their fee. Because my manager didn't find an apartment within a week-they demanded their money back. I directed them to my manager. He reminded them that the application clearly stated that he was obligated to look for apartments for them for one year.

I was half paying attention, this was a summer job, my sisters godmother was screwing the owner and I was BORED. Next thing I saw out of my peripheal vision was this silver gun. I was like blink.gif and DON'T ASK ME WHYYYYYYYYYYYY I did this but I did. I picked up the phone and instead of calling the police-I called my MOMMY.

Me: Chums?
My Mother: Yes baby?
Me: This guy has a gun in Mr. Keyes belly, can I come home?
My Mother: Uhhhhhhhh YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Right Now!
Me: Ok

Now I swear on Gods Throne-I hung up the phone. Opened my drawer, got my purse , stood up and announced:

Me to Larry Davis: I am going home now
Me to Mr. Keyes: I quit.
Larry Davis: Sit the fuck down Bitch.

I proceed to cry. Yes, I did. I kept telling him I didn't want to be here ANYMORE and that I wanted to go home to my mother.

I guess I looked sooooooooooo pityful or God touched his heart-because he let me go. My ass booked it. Flo Jo had shit on me. I had NEVER been so scared shitless(until 9/11) in my life.

That motherfucker shot 20 cops a week later. I was jumping up and down screaming THAT'S HIM, THAT'S HIM! I had and still don't have ANY SYMPATHY for that fucker. angry.gif I was eighteen. I often have that dream because he really could have killed me just for picking up the phone. I guess he was just shocked that I could be so brazen and when he heard me say Chums instead of Police he couldn't believe it.

My mother DID call the police. He robbed my manager not only for the fee but the days take. Fucker. angry.gif

What Up D?

Dammmm.....

D-Nice,

I stumbled onto your site and read about your encounter with Larry Davis back in da day.

My mother lived in Washignton Heights (Uptown Manhattan) and my father lived in the South Bronx (Cypress Ave.)

I would spend equal amounts of time in both places back then in da 1980's and I remember having to go to the Bronx criminal court house in 1986 late one evening where my cousin was being arraigned for some bullshit crime that I can't even remember, but anywayz, what I do remember was that about after an hour in and outside the court house there was a growing number of people (onlookers & media) gathering.

I remember thinking to myself (what the fuck is going on?) when all of a sudden an army of cops came in and had Larry Davis in cuffs.

I was 18 back then in 1986 and can remember all the media coverage, and the 17 day manhunt for Larry that would follow.

Larry was, and still is a legend in my mind, especially when those fucking cops did nothing but fuck with us getto kidz back in da day, for no fucking reason but to only fuck with us, and give us a shit load of time.

FREE LARRY DAVIS!!!!

That was interesting i just watched the documentrey on Larry Davis i want to Know is he still locked up

THATS MAD WILD NICE. I CAN'T LIE IF THAT WAS THE KID,I AIN'T LETTIN NOBODY TAKE S@$T FROM ME ,BUT WHEN A DUDE COME ALONG MAD WILDER THAN YOU CAN GET ....MAN YOU DID THE RIGHT THING.GLAD YOU HERE TO SHARE THAT STORY.I GOT THAT DVD OF LARRY DAVIS REAL RECOGNIZE REAL AND I DON'T EVEN CLAIM TO BE BUILT LIKE DUDE ...I'M A LIL CRAZY.BUT HE WAS BA-NA NAZ.AND WHEN THEY FORCED HIS HAND SHEESH!

i thank the lord for my blessings, and im glad he gave us the willpower and the reflexes of Larry Davis

What's good D? I was livin in soundview at da time the manhunt was going on. I remember all the adults around the way talkin about it. I was young then probably 7 years old, it all came back to me when I saw the documentary,my moms & my older brother reminded me and brought back memories. my pops was livin on franklin(up da block from webster projects). My moms wouldn't let me visit him while the cops was looking 4 larry.I live in SC now,& I've been letting everybody watch the movie that comes in my crib.(I'm a singer)At the studio; I let every body watch it, now everybody got a reference to larry davis in their rhymes and R&B tracks... at first I was like "damn they jumpin on da bandwagon" now I realize they're only "puttin da bug" in the next man's ear;passin the story on or at least sparking an intrest. them cops had my cousin sellin 4 them back in the 80's. In 96' they brought up all those old drug charges on him...that shit was happenning 2 alot of brothers in the hood! they never said when Larry was suppossed 2 B released!?....PS> I BET U DIDN'T BUY NOMORE CHAINS!!! 1 kai.

Thanks for that clarification. My name is Larry Davis and people are always shouting my name in songs. ie... Jay Z, Nas a couple times. Now I know why. Holla

D, I was telling some of my out of town friends about Larry Davis cause they never heard of him. Although it was a national story it didn't resonate cause it wasn't their town and most of them are younger than me so they were very young when that went down. So when he pops up in rhymes like Jay-Z's "The combination of Pappy Mason and Larry Davis" they have no clue, Now they do. Thanks bro.

I f I was you I would have climbed out the window dogs!! lol That is some real shit D. I guess this is pre Violator days huh?

Wow, I remember those days when lived in the tenements of 169 and Boston Road. Eons ago! And I remember the man hunt like it was yesterday. Close call D-Nice.

wow Dee that's not a game! That's one of my favorite rhymes on the what's the scenerio re-mix "wild like Larry Davis!" Ice-cube and smokey had nothing on you when Big Worm was coming back at mid-night. Your had a real situation on your hands. What if you would have tossed it on the floor 2 seconds after he walked away to make sure he picked it up! Man I'm getting that rollercoaster feeling my stomach just thinking about it! LOL. Good story. Remind me to tell you about the one Pimp chasing my on the 7 train when i was 14!! Peace Drew.

Classic.
