A Message To J-Sun
First, let me start of by saying that I truly enjoy blogging. It was first introduced to me by a friend of mine name Ian Steaman of A Different Kitchen. After reading a few of my e-journals, Ian reccomended that I put up a site to allow people to comment on what I was writing. I have since become just as addicted to the comments as I am to my own blog entries.
There was one particular comment made by J-Sun that I felt was out of line. He accused me of being a name dropper. I'm starting to think that people mistake my enthusiasm for cockiness. Part of the reason I enjoy what I am doing as a dj is because I get to meet some interesting people. Part of the reason I enjoy blogging is because I get to translate my excitement into words and share them with people who are interested in what's going on in my world. Why else would people be here at d-nice.com?
How could I truly express the excitement of conversing with legends like DMC or Bob Seger without mentioning their names? How could I show my progress as a dj without mentioning the names of people I'm djing for? This is my personal journal and I would suggest to anyone who is not truly interested in my thoughts and feelings to check out another blog.

ayo haterz are gonna hate, but whatever man. I think as long as you are being respectful when you talk about other people, then that's fine. (ie giving them props is cool.. dissing them would not be cool)
I wouldn't necessarily talk about a private moment I spent with a famous person (like having someone over for dinner, etc), but if I was at a large, public party, performance or other such event, then those people and events happen in order to be talked about, so that's cool. or if we did a track together or something, I'd play it to everyone I knew, etc

Thats funny Brown Sugar just came up; I love that flick. but yeah, D-Nice's name came up in that movie for a minute, in a reference about Taye Diggs thinking he was D-Nice when he got his first TR-808 drum machine.
LOL: Sometimes I still think I'm D-Nice when I dig out my Roland R8 drum machine with the 808 sound card. personally I think the 909 was punchier, but the 808 is golden. matter of fact, lemme go make some beats tonight.
for real though, Brown Sugar got it right; I think cats like D-Nice, Rick Ruban and Mantronix made that ole analog monstrousity famous for hip hop heads. Thats a jewel of Hip Hop history, and your still hearing it today, especially with with them cats in the south.
keep the love coming D, we're listening.

Hey is it possible that J-Sun just wanted you to put him in the spotlight? He could have an alias as a new "hater" but maybe he wanted to catch your eye to get just that....publicity. I enjoy your blog, you photography, etc. You have opened my eyes to areas in NY that I have never been to unless I make the journey. I will just get to enjoy the tourism of it all but you live and brethe the hip hop culture from uptown. I Got much love for all the has come from NY. You have made me appreciate what has help to raise me into a mature young mother (age 32) and to teach my seed (Ki-Lo, age 10) of what was good when i was a younster and to teach him what the movie Brown Sugar represents......1Luv to all....D-Nice....like my true name--KIM--->>>Keep It Moving!!!

I have to give you a lot of respect for keeping a hip hop career alive and branching out into the genres of hip hop writing and photography.
So many hip hop icons fade into relics of the past kept alive only by hip hop documentaries, memories and historians, watching folks like Kool G Rap, Chuck D, and Yourself find active roles in defining hip hop today make me proud to be a lifelong hip hop fan.
Peace,

What's up D-Nice!
I'm really feeling the stories you present on your blog. I'm a DJ myself, and it's inspiration to hear about the parties and events that you do. I've wanted to give up plenty of times due to shady promoters, someone in the crew disturbing things, etc. But it's the love of DJing that calls me back. It's also people like you who are @ the position you are and humble about it. Thank You!

ain't nothing wrong with name dropping..if you can do it, do it...Maybe people think you're cocky from your old videos...
Back when I was young, I always noticed that you made sure that that camera stayed right in your grill for the whole video...Now I'm not against a nigga who loves himself because I love myself like a muthafucka...But there's just ankle biters out here who can't drop nare one name who will take offense to what you do.
Do what the fuck you want to do. Cause ain't none of us trying to pay your bills.
Posted by: MrNoGood | March 9, 2006 12:45 AM
that's um.... gay. it's one thing if you're using names to impres people, but it's another when it's relevant to the story.

You know when you write a journal, online or not, what sense would it make to ommit the individuals you interacted with that lead you to write it? The experiences that you write about gives a lot of us the ability to see and read about things no magazine or article has provided. We are here to see your world seen through your eyes translated into photos and words.
I tell people about your blog all the time.
"Hello my name is Heyward and I'm a name dropper"
Posted by: Heyward | March 8, 2006 07:29 AM
I think it's great that you share your adventures in DJing with the average person. I know many people out there wish they would know what's on a celebrity's mind. The fact that you actually have a personal blog for all to see is more down to earth. That's the keeping it REAL part that so many people talk about. Most people keeping it REAL also KEEP it DISTANT. They are detached from the general public and don't connect in this way. I am glad that someone that is rooted in the hiphop culture is showing that they are more than just talent. You are definitely showing that intelligence goes a long way by embracing new technology. These podcasts and blogging sites are giving people real power. D-Nice, you seem to be dedicated to empowering yourself through these means, and I hope it's a trend that you set amongst the HipHop elite. It's like building your own house with your own two hands. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but you are in THE BUSINESS and the people you speak to on a daily basis might seem normal to you, but to J-Sun it seems like a starstruck disorder that compels him to brand you a "name dropper". ONE Love. Long live the Boogie Down.
Posted by: mikeboogie70 | March 7, 2006 06:02 AM
your blog is phenomenal. keep doing your thing. folk will have their opinions regardless of what you say so you have to operate independently of their wants. you don't have to convince anybody of your intentions so long as you know in your heart what they are. do this for you and screw those who don't get it. that's on them.

D... You gave that boy waaayyy too much shine. Think about it. 99% of these comments are positive which is astounding considering the amount of haters out there. You really are getting a rediculous amount of love. BTW - the geeks in our fantasy bball league are pissed that you aren't paying attention so I will be posting your last blog entry. Should clear things up a bit. Also, Priscilla and I will be in Miami on the 21st of March. I would like to be placed on your VIP guest list for mansion that night and sat in between Nelly and Nas (Shit, It worked on myspace!) ;)

Hi all,
I'm Roger from Trinidad and I enjoy the site so far. It's really nice to see you guys this close up as this is the closest I may ever get to being in your company. I have been a hiphop fan from since 1983 and at age 32, I still have never lost the taste for soem delicious undergroup hiphop.
Sometime I am perplexed by by the changes and movements in teh industry but I have come to terms with it to soem extent.
I love the turntables and even while reading my statistics textbooks and my Aristotle and Plato, I go back to the "Classic" hiphop that found me those years and transported me to a level from which I have never come down. I never got to be the "DJ Jazzay Jeff" or "DJ Vance Wright" or "DJ Eddie F" that I wanted to be but I do not mind. I loved those mixtapes my neighbour used to bring for me. I loved "Yo Mama!" and "Delancey Street".
Those days will never fade and you are doing a good job of bringing forward the same spirit that filled me in those days.
Keep it going.

Part of what you do requires networking, so who cares if you drop names every once in a while. People who don't like it, don't have to read your posts.
Posted by: Nikki | March 1, 2006 11:24 AM
I just happened to be browsing and came across your site. Up until recently, I didn't even know you did photography and maintain a constant dialogue with your fans. I don't know too many cats in the game that do that, so that alone garners my respect.
I'll do some name dropping right now. D-Nice is a hip hop LEGEND; Anybody with half a brain knows this. This dude must be seriously young minded, so you gotta remember this day and age we're dealing with. This ain't even our music anymore, it belongs to corporate america.
Was this what we wanted back then? who knows,
but you, D-Nice are a reflection of that golden age True School Hip Hop. Thats immutable like gold, brother, and your still shining.

Hi,
please don't bother about such comments. It's no use taking every written word to heart - especially in the Internet. Your message comes to the point and that's enough.
Don't waste your time answering some idiots, better write some more stories. I enjoy reading every detail, especially those of your experiences back in the days.
Keep up the good work!

Well put D-nice!! I love reading your journals. I get inspiration everytime I read about your determination to stay in the game. Not only are you doing your thing in the spot light, you are also holding it down behind the scenes. J-sun sounds like a disgruntled
Wanna Be!

This is the best website ever! I can't stop reading your journal entries. I've spent all day reading everything on the site (and I'm at work!) I've been a huge fan of yours since BDP. I'm so glad you came back, I was wondering where you were. Your photography is awesome. I would love to do that. Thanks so much for keeping us posted and showing us the happenings.

Oh, Holla at me D.
Posted by: E | February 24, 2006 12:22 PM
D-nice does not have to name drop, because he is an original. He has been in the game since he was a teenager. First with BDP, then as a solo artist, and now as a party DJ. D, I enjoy your blogs, keep doing what you do! "The TR808 D-nice, The Poet the Blastmaster KRS-One, The Incrediable DJ Scott Larock, Boogie Down Productions, Fresh for 2006 you suckas!"

I was introduced to your blog after I saw you in atl at that Talib show and I was looking for a website that you own (to link to a post I made) and I found this.
1. In the blogosphers you haven't made it until someone says something bad about you - So take his comments as a compliment. It means he cared enough to even write something. My point "Brush it off" - but at least it does let me know that you do read the comments
2. I love the photos here and had no clue that you even took photos until I saw this blog... and have since become a regular (well as regular as you post) reader - though lurker is more the term since I rarely comment.
3. I was just telling someone this week that "one of the reasons why I continued to blog (After I exorcised the demons of the bastard who drove me to do it), because I write but never let people see the stuff I write. So I figured if I could post the unspell/grammer checked stuff to my blog then I could eventually share the stuff I consider good with the world... eventually". The comments and the feedback (and not to mention marketing research - I write a few marketing blogs) is unbelieveable. So keep on writing.
