Illustrious

Every now and then I'll experience something that reminds me why I love hip-hop. Last night I was supposed to dj a set at the birthday celebration of my good friend Dana Dane. When I walked into the club and saw who was there, djing was the last thing on my mind. It was camera time baby! Dana Dane, Slick Rick, Kurtis Blow, The Beatnuts, DJ Scratch, Greg Nice, and many more! The legends were in the building! Shouts out to producer Rashad Smith for assisting me. Enjoy.

Hip Hop at its root has always been a part of my heartbeat. Seeing these pictures made me miss the love of all that was honest and pure about it. The music, the creativity, the energy, the spirt of the art of hip hop music...at 33 years old those sounds and feelings still hold true when I see you guys and hear the familar sounds of the work that you all have left as part of our generations legacy!
Your work is absolutely amazing (but you know that) and your talent, the work that comes from your soul is a gift that humbles me. I thank you for sharing it...then and now!!!
I use to love you...I still do...I always will!
God Bless!!!

Oh My God! D Nice, I found your blog/journal from a link on the Black Weblog Awards site. First, CONGRATS on winning this much deserved award; I spent the last half hour browsing your site and looking at your outstanding photography!
I had no idea you are such a gifted photographer! Your work is stellar and absolutely beautiful. I'm looking through your self portraits and throught the portfolios of Slick Rick, Dana Dane, Sweet Tee and tears started welling up in my eyes! I'm 33 years old, '73 born and these outstanding music & Hip Hop PIONEERS were who I listened to. I grew up on you guys - I'm really emotional right now. Looking through your site just sent me back in a time machine and I'm loving the ride.
I just want to thank you and all your peers, who are still around and looking as vibrant and beautiful as ever, for sharing your talents and your music. Can't wait to see all these beautiful photos compiled into a book! I'm so glad I found this blog - D, your work is outstanding. Continued success!

D-Nice, thanks for the pictures of all my heros as a youngster. It does my heart glad to see these pioneers who I admire and respect for their contributions to Hip Hop culture. Shirt Kings were my heros in Queens they tagged a wall off Jamaica Avenue and I loved the sweatshirts they used to do. I still remember the dope steps of scoob lover with Big Daddy Kane back in the day, when dance was fun. Still got my Sweet Tee cassette tapes, man I loved her!!! Greg Nice had me going hard music as I cruised around town in my hoopty. Slick Rick and Dana Dane will ALWAYS be the smoothest, most stylish rappers ever...

To repeat everyone else - these photos are Da Balm-Diggity (not a typo;-)!! As much as I enjoy u as a DJ, D-nice it's a blessing that u are an image-saver! ONLY YOU could capture such classic Black Strength & Love! Your experience in the field of hip-hop and the repoire you have with artists is incomparable! NOBody else could capture the essence as you do because u've BEEN there and it's evident that you're MORE than just a FAN of these cats - your ONE of them and they KNOW, Love & RESPECT it!
We are eternal survivors and re-inventors of ourselves. Sometimes I get discouraged about where our people are headed, but you make me GLAD that I came of age in the Hip-Hop era:-). Thank you D-nice. God is working through you, beautifully!

D. the photos are all classics! What else can I say when it comes to your photography I just love it. Your Black and White shots just say something all the time and just looking at the above vets brings back made memories. Thankyou for always doing the damn thang.
Also, your DTV today was the first time I peeped it, great touch...keep it up. By the way, who did your DTB logo (was that your concept?).
Posted by: Wanda | September 7, 2006 12:14 PM
FIYAHH!!! As I peeped each pic I caught maaaad flashbacks! From taping these cats' music videos off of Video Music Box on of the first BETA and VCRs that come out when I was 8 to staying up late night to hear Red Alert & Chuck Chillout do play strictly hip-hop on Friday nights only in New York to me & my cousin Rashad Smith (pic above) at 11, 12 years old standing outside Latin Quarters nightclub on Union Square stressed cause we couldnt get in, had curfew and going to our first club the Red Parrot to catch cats like Kid-N-Play and Salt-N-pepa to hearing Nice & Smooth at RedZone an Powerhouse, crazy!
We did it a lil later than these cats from mid-80's on but we was on it EARLY from 10, 11 years old anyway. No matter how much we grow older I still see the hotness in these cats and I gotta thank D-Nice to keeping the memories alive through hot pics like these.

Sccob Lover, Dude just popped out of nowhere since lord knows when. VJ Ralph McDaniels, Video Music Box is still better than MTV and BET combined!!! When I was going to Florida on a 6 months basis between 88-92 I used to tell cats that never lived in NY that these phoney rap shows has nothing on VJ Ralph McDaniels. He still has the exclusives.
