Leica M8 Photoblog (14): Chamillionaire

One of the things I love most about being D-Nice is that I have access to so many people. I met Chamillionaire a few months ago and found him to be one of the most charismatic rappers I've met in a long time. Even when his #1 record "Ridin' Dirty" was all over the charts, he still showed a bit of humility. When fellow photographer and friend Jonathan Mannion told me that he was photographing Cham for the cover of the Source, I had to be there to document the session.

Your use of lighting is sick! I love B&W shots for their drama, and I've learned just how tough shooting great ones can be. Great work, D, and much love for the classic music you've brought to my ears. Peace and blessings!

This is a great set of images...
I dig how you play the background & make the shots look like a peek into the photoshoot...
Best,

are using their God given talents for what God meant them to be used for, waking up the people.

Hey, D.
It's been a minute...anyway, I had to say two things. Last week, just as was thinking, "wow, D hasn't posted any new pics for a while, he must be busy cuz I know he ain't forgot about us:)" I walk into 7-eleven and see the cover of the source magazine. And who do I see? Chamillionaire. The photo from this blog. I felt so connected. So thanks for allowing me the luxury of being ahead of the game instead of behind. Next thing is that I am just getting around to watching my recording of "America's Next Producer" the one right before the finale. I really like Zo and hope he wins...we'll see...I will watch the finale after this episode. Zo was pitching his show ideas to the guy from Imagine studios and as he reflected on his inspiration Gordon Parks, he gets overwhelmed with emotion and starts crying. I don't know what it is about a strong man crying that really is the epitome of strength to me...kind of the irony that tears are supposed to represent weakness. Anyway, he said he had dinner with Mr. Parks and that Mr. Parks had put his hands on his shoulders and told him he was the future. I just thought of you as I watched that. This is a really good show. I may try out to be a contestant next season (just jokes - I can't leave my fam). All right, well, Mr. Jones take care and I really hope that all is well with you and yours and that we will be able to enjoy some more fruits of your labors in the near future.

what a trip; i'm sitting here just trying to get some true school fix (via my mp3's and last.fm), and i was reminded that i needed to hear some d-nice, which led me to google...lo and behold, i find a *leica M8* journal! what the heck?
i'm a hip hopper who grew up on it, DJ'd a bit, and still do it from time to time, but my biggest passion is photography! so it was really dope to find out that you're doing it, and for sure, doing it well. really really digging the work you're putting down, and looking forward to seeing lots more.
you killed it with these shots here--true documentary, and worked with the light well.
too fly. you don't know how geeked i am about finding this out (and why hadn't i known before i'm sorry).
thanks for sharing it.

I love Chamillionaire!!!
And I also enjoy reading your blogs! The other day, me and my cousin was watching videos and SelfDestruction came on. She was like: "What ever happen to D-Nice?" So, I directed her here and she was so happy to see that you were still around doing your thing!
I've decided to post a link on my online magazine called:
WutzReallyGood!!!
My viewers LOVE it.
Hope you don't mind!
Thanks for keeping us entertained.

Again... I am blessed to be apart of your documents of life. Thanks for being such a great narrator of it.
It is something about your pictures that no matter what they depict, it makes me feel good inside. I was down because of the STREET WARS IN PHILLY and trying to keep my kids inspired about life that this was not a good day. Until I received your email. And even though it was of pics of someone elses life, I still found peace and happiness viewing them. I feel your passion in the pics and that always inspire me. My passion may be different, but it shows be that beautiful things are developed through passion.
Thanks D... Peace Love Elation as always

Hey D...
Just jumped off the red-eye from LA working with Nick Cannon on this STOP HATING campaign and now I'm in Miami working with Trina... (sometimes it's hard being a rock star!!! I know you can attest to that being in such high demand as you are... Did we sign up for this.... Damnnnn... We absolutely did!!!) I had the humbling opportunity of shooting the legendary Quincy Jones among countless others TI, Lil Jon, Tom (your myspace friend and mine), on and on... Wish you could have been there to document that...
"I gotta say it was a good day..." -Cube
You got some great shots my man of the Cham shoot... I have to thank you for coming through to document a little piece of history & want to say that you're an inspiration to me and a so many people because of your exuberance and passion for life and photography... Take notes people... this is how it's done! Following your dream and creating the life that you want to live... everything else will fall into place when you operate from the heart... anyone that knows D, knows what I'm talking about.
I'm proud to call you a great friend Derrick Jones... You're a King!
Bless up!
J.Mannion

He is always so humble in his acceptance speeches. And that ridin dirty remix was one of the hottest politically on point songs that I've heard since the NWA F the Police or PE 911 is a joke days I would have to say. That actually got radio play...that was the suprise.

I don't comment as often as I would like...but again, your images are great. Keep up the good work.
